JACOB'S BIOGRAPHY
JACOB SUR (*1995 IN ALTOETTING, UPPER BAVARIA) IS A SOUTHERN GERMAN MUSICIAN (PIANO, GUITAR, VOCALS) WHO HAS BEEN LIVING IN LUCERNE, SWITZERLAND, FOR SEVERAL YEARS.
GROWING UP IN THE BAVARIAN FOOTHILLS OF THE ALPS, HE CAME INTO CONTACT WITH MUSIC AT AN EARLY AGE AND RECEIVED PIANO AND VIOLIN LESSONS. AFTER COMPLETING HIS TRAINING AS NURSE, HE MOVED TO ZURICH, WHERE HE FELL IN LOVE WITH JAZZ AND IMPROVISED MUSIC AT A JAM SESSION ONE EVENING.
THE FOLLOWING YEAR HE BEGAN STUDYING PIANO AT THE LUCERNE SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND STUDIED WITH JEAN-PAUL BRODBECK AND MICHAEL ARBENZ, WHERE HE ALSO TOOK COURSES WITH NUMEROUS RENOWNED ARTISTS.
MASTER CLASSES HAVE TAKEN PLACE WITH LYNNE ARRIALE, ETHAN IVERSON, ANGELICA SANCHEZ, AARON PARKS, KENDRICK SCOTT, BILL CARROTHERS, MELISSA ALDANA AND JOVINO SANTOS NETO.
SUR PLAYED CONCERTS WITH INTERNATIONAL GREATS SUCH AS INGRID LAUBROCK, DANIEL SCHNYDER, MICHAEL FORMANEK, PERICO SAMBEAT, KRISTIN BERARDI, HERMETO PASCOAL, MARIUS NESET AND ANTON EGER.
IN APRIL 2023 HE WAS PART OF THE „SWISS YOUTH FUNK ENSEMBLE“, WITH WHICH HE SHARED THE STAGE WITH YOUNG TALENTS FROM THE SWISS JAZZ SCENE AND MUSICIANS SUCH AS GENE LAKE, JAMES GENUS (HERBIE HANCOCK), MARK WHITFIELD, RAY ANGRY, TONY LAKATOS AND RYAN QUIGLEY.
HE FEELS COMFORTABLE IN MANY GENRES AND DOESN’T LIKE TO BE ASSIGNED TO A SPECIFIC STYLE OF MUSIC, ALTHOUGH TRADITIONAL JAZZ STILL SERVES AS A STARTING POINT AND VEHICLE TO OTHER STYLES:
„EXPERIENCING THE WORLD FROM JUST ONE PERSPECTIVE WOULDN’T DO JUSTICE TO ITS INSANE BEAUTY, SO I’M KIND OF FORCED TO BE ‚MANY‘.“
HE IS CURRENTLY DOING A MASTER OF ARTS IN MUSIC EDUCATION AT THE LUCERNE UNIVERSITY OF APPLIED SCIENCES AND ARTS, IS THE PIANIST OF THE „BIG BAND ZUG“, THE „MAURICE STORRER QUARTET“ AND GUITARIST/SONGWRITER OF THE LUCERNE INDIE BAND „MONO MOCHI“.
